Summit Description:
Transportation plays a major role in the health and wellness of all individuals. Public transportation can be an important enabler of access to health services, resulting in greater preventive care, fewer unnecessary hospital readmissions, and lower costs. This can lead to improved health for those with chronic conditions, and reduced health disparities by ensuring that at risk populations can get to care. The ability to meet personal fitness standards as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control can be greatly facilitated through safe bicycle and pedestrian facilities coordinated with convenient public transit stops. Through rides/public transportation, people and community health can thrive.

Unfortunately in South Carolina, accessible and affordable public transportation is not available to all the citizens of our state. Six counties have no public transportation services available. The remainder of the state is served by rural, small urban, and urban systems that have limited hours of service and a limited range of routes due to the lack of adequate funding to expand as needed. State funding for public transit has not increased since 1987, while the cost for mobile infrastructure, operations, and system administration have climbed steadily with increasing costs for goods and services. Congestion on the state’s highways is continuing to increase, along with related carbon emissions, impacting air quality and our environment.

Onsite check-in begins at 8:00am. Continental breakfast will be served at 8:15am. The Summit will begin at 9:00am. Lunch will be provided. We should adjourn around 4:30pm.
